Tips for Saving on Transportation Costs on the Shinbundang Line Pass
I commute to work on the Shinbundang Line from Migeum Station to Sinnonhyeon Station, and the high fares are a burden. Fortunately, I can commute by just taking the Shinbundang Line without having to transfer to a bus. So, I purchased a subway pass and use it. It’s saved me a lot of money. If you’re looking to save money on transportation like me, I recommend purchasing a subway pass. However, if you need to transfer to a bus, a subway pass doesn’t offer a transfer discount, so I wouldn’t recommend it.
The Shinbundang Line is notorious for its outrageous fares, and using a subway pass is especially crucial. The base fare for a postpaid transportation card is 1,750 won. If you commute from Migeum Station to Sinnonhyeon Station every day like me, I highly recommend using a subway pass. Please refer to this post.

Shinbundang Line Pass
To purchase a subway pass, visit the Customer Service Center and purchase a 2,500 won card. Recharge it with the appropriate pass for your intended route. It can be used on all subway lines in Seoul and the greater Seoul area. However, some sections, such as the Airport Railroad, operate independently.
Passes are valid for 60 rides or 30 days from the date of recharge. After 60 rides or 30 days, the remaining balance will expire and must be recharged.
If you are using a different line than the Shinbundang Line and are transferring through the Shinbundang Line, recharge the pass with the appropriate pass level for the Shinbundang Line section.
As shown in the photo, the Shinbundang Line’s fare varies depending on the route. When choosing a route, you should carefully consider whether you’re traveling between Sinsa and Gangnam, Gangnam and Jeongja, Jeongja and Gwanggyo, or not using the Shinbundang Line at all. Therefore, choose carefully.

Considering that the Seoul-only commuter pass, valid on Seoul Subway Lines 1 through 9 and Korail sections, costs 55,000 won, the Shinbundang Line commuter pass is truly expensive.
Many people wonder about this when using subway commuter passes. If you exceed the fare limit on your commuter pass, an additional fare will be deducted when you disembark or transfer.
Notes
When using a Shinbundang Line commuter pass, keep in mind that the minimum pass level for each Shinbundang Line section is 65,500 won or more for Level 4 from Sinsa Station to Gangnam Station on the Shinbundang Line, and 84,200 won or more for Level 9 from Yangjae Station to Gwanggyo Station on the Shinbundang Line.
Passes below the minimum pass level for each Shinbundang Line section are not valid for Shinbundang Line sections. However, transfers from other lines to the Shinbundang Line transfer gate are permitted, but an additional fare of 1 min will be deducted.
If you commute to work more than 20 days a month using only the subway, using a commuter pass can save you money. This is especially true for privately operated, privately funded subway lines like the Shinbundang Line, so be sure to use your commuter pass to save on fares.
